how to travel around the Maltese Islands without stress
Public Transport in Malta
Public Transport in Malta
To our guests coming to Malta, we recommend two ways of getting around the islands safely and conveniently. These are either the public transport (an extensive network of connections) or the Bolt app (local equivalent of Uber).
By bus around Malta
The buses in Malta are managed by Malta Public Transport (MPT) – it is easy to recognize the characteristics of the white and green vehicles on the streets. Before arriving in Malta, it is worth downloading the Tallinja App (download for Apple/download for Android) to your smartphone, to get the latest updates on the bus’s arrival time as well as any recommended routes to choose when selecting this service. The Tallinja App uses GPS to show you the bus stops near you (or your Accommodation) and the real time location of the bus you are waiting for.
Single bus tickets
Single tickets are bought directly from the driver (at the moment, due to COVID-19 regulations, you need exact amount of money as the drivers do not give change). A single ticket is valid for 2 hours from the time of purchase for all transfers (except express and night routes) and costs €1.50 in the winter and €2.00 in the summer season (from mid-June to mid-October).
Season bus tickets
If you plan to travel and explore the Maltese Islands extensively, the most cost-effective solution are the season tickets (long-term). They take the form of plastic cards and can be bought in almost every grocery/souvenir shop or at Malta Public Transport information points. There are 3 types to choose from:
- Tallinja 12 journeys – valid for 12 trips – for €15
- Tallinja Explore – valid for 7 days from validation for an unlimited number of journeys – for €21
- Tallinja Explore Plus Meep – valid for 7 days from the time of validation for an unlimited number of trips, including the use of/discounts at many additional services (details on the Malta Public Transport website) – at €39
Bolt app in Malta
If you care about the duration of your journeys and the comfort of your transfer, we recommend using the Bolt smartphone app. Uber does not operate in Malta, however, Bolt works in the same way, allowing you to order a direct private transfer from any location.
